SPORTS JOURNALISM

Being not just a journalist, but also an athlete, I love it whenever I get the chance to showcase my fellow Bruin athletes. From football, to baseball, to even archery, I'll do it all. So many of the students at St. Joe not only have the brains, but they also have the brawn. Our school's trophy cases are packed, and all of the medals and trophies are products of the blood, sweat, and tears that our student-athletes and coaches have put into their sport. A lot of times, the hard work that they put in every day is overlooked. I feel it is my job as a journalist to shine the spotlight on our diligent athletes and coaches.

VOLLEYBALL WINS STATE: OCTOBER 15, 2021

EPISODE 07-11, BRUIN NEWS NOW: 10-15-2022

(starts at 1:45)

This is a story I produced when the St. Joseph Catholic School volleyball team won the championship on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021. The win was unexpected. In fact, our broadcast class had already filmed the weekly newscast on Wednesday. The Lady Bruin team, which had a losing regular season, wasn't expected to do well in the state tournament.

When the team advanced to the championship game Thursday and then won, I immediately jumped into reporter-mode. I pulled out my cell phone, filmed video of the wild celebration after the win and began conducting interviews. I even filmed a stand-up outside the Mississippi College coliseum where the championship game was played.

The next morning, my class met early before school, re-filmed the start of the newscast and then I quickly re-edited the entire program -- making my story on the championship the lead story. It was a great lesson in how late-breaking news can change everything, forcing our broadcast team to quickly re-think and re-arrange everything they already wrote and filmed.

We covered the big story and put it up on the air, and the story won finalist for Best Sports Story at the 2021 Fall MSPA Convention.

SPORTS ANCHORING
Not only have I produced award winning sports packages, but I have also anchored sports.
Here is a sample of a sportscast that I anchored and edited. (starting at 7:55)

This is my 2023-24 anchor reel, including all of the times I have anchored this school year.

Here is the most recent time I anchored sports:

As sports director of Bruin News Now this year, I have led multiple broadcasts, as well as some new ones.

Bruin Backcourt - Live Sports Show

I, along with my co-host Connor Odom, have started a live sports show, the Bruin Backcourt, on location at a local restaurant, Sal and Mookie's. We invite coaches and players to the show to talk about their respective seasons, star athletes, and expectations. Although we've had to work out audio and connection kinks, our crew has worked hard to solve these issues in order to make our broadcast the best it can be. Watch our broadcasts below!

During this episode, my regular co-host Connor Odom was sick, so one of our top sports anchors, Malick Yedjou, joined me on the show.

Bruin Football

During the 2023 Varsity Football season, I was also the Bruin Football Halftime Host. Below are some of the games in which I hosted the Halftime Show.

1st game of the 2023 season:
starts at 11:32

starts at 52:48
